The role of nitrogen booster in nitrogen generator

In the 1970s, carbotech Corporation (formerly BF Corporation) was among the first globally to develop nitrogen production processes and carbon molecular sieves for ammonia synthesis, which led to the rapid development of ammonia production facilities in the 1980s and 1990s. With the advancement of science and technology, the application of nitrogen has expanded from traditional industries such as metallurgy and chemical engineering to sectors like textiles, electronics, pharmaceuticals, food, and rubber. The methods of production have also evolved from the single deep cooling process to ammonia synthesis units based on pressure swing adsorption principles.

Pressure Swing Adsorption (Pressure swing Adsorption, abbreviated as PSA) is an advanced gas separation technology that holds an irreplaceable position in gas production at ambient temperature. The PSA ammonia production unit is a high-tech, energy-saving separation technique that directly produces ammonia from air at room temperature. It uses compressed air, after being purified through oil removal, water removal, and dust removal, to separate nitrogen under pressure swing adsorption. Due to kinetic effects, oxygen diffuses significantly faster than nitrogen on carbon molecular sieves. Before equilibrium is reached, nitrogen becomes enriched in the gas phase. By employing imported PLC automatic control technology, it achieves continuous production of high-quality ammonia. This system boasts compact equipment, small footprint, fully automated operation, reliable performance, quick start-up and shutdown, low operating costs, and convenient maintenance at ambient temperature. The purity of ammonia can be adjusted according to flow rate, with no environmental pollution, making it an efficient on-site gas production device. Carbon molecular sieves are the core component of PSA nitrogen production, featuring a large number of micropores on their surface. Under certain pressure, they adsorb oxygen, carbon dioxide, and moisture from the air, while absorbing very little ammonia, which flows out from the top of the adsorption tower. When the pressure drops to atmospheric levels, the adsorbed oxygen, carbon dioxide, and moisture are released from the carbon molecular sieve. The PSA nitrogen generator operates based on this principle, typically setting up two adsorption towers in the system: one for nitrogen production and the other for desorption and regeneration, alternating in a cycle to continuously produce ammonia. Usually, customers use ammonia gas in two kinds of pressure, one is less than 10bar, the other is more than 10bar, especially for customers with pressure above 10bar, ammonia gas booster is required to increase ammonia gas to the actual process demand.

The nitrogen booster pump, also known as a nitrogen booster, is a reciprocating booster pump. Unlike a plunger pump, it falls under the category of piston boosters. The working principle of the nitrogen booster involves using the pressure difference formed by the area ratio, where the small force applied to the large piston generates high-pressure nitrogen for output. The high-pressure nitrogen at the output end is controlled by a high-pressure check valve to ensure its proper discharge. Nitrogen is an inert gas; over half of the air is composed of nitrogen, which makes it a convenient tool for pressurizing and filling nitrogen cylinders or nitrogen generators in nitrogen production machines. The application range of nitrogen is extensive, including automotive, aerospace, laboratory, medical, and industrial fields, highlighting its importance in areas with high pressure requirements for ammonia, such as nitrogen boosters. Its applications can be summarized as follows.
